At a time when the world is frantically fighting the deadly viral COVID —19, Nigerian pop stars, Naira Marley and his “Am I a Yahoo boy” counterpart, Zlatan Ibile have taken to their social media to make tactless and insensitive jokes about the virus.
All over the world, celebrities and public figures are joining hands with governments and other relevant health agencies to help drive the agenda to keep people at home and inform the public about health guidelines to stay safe from the Corona Virus through their social media accounts as well as other platforms.
As responsible adults with public influence during a world pandemic, our celebrities should be doing all they can in their power to assuage the fears of their fans and supporters while encouraging them to follow the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health to stop the further transmission of the virus around the country.
However, Nigerian pop stars, Naira Marley and his dreadlocked counterpart Zlatan Ibile chose this crucial time to display their insensitivity, irresponsibility and a total lack of regard for their fans and supporters— who’s dedication to their music of course brought the duo more fame after their popular spat with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in 2019.
Zlatan had taken to his Twitter account to post insensitive jokes about the Corona Virus with a snide prayer asking God to kill his enemies by Corona virus infection. And why? Because some fans had the liberty to criticize his recent release with Fuji artiste, Obesere!
It’s a truly dreadful song in all honesty and if fans can’t tell their favorite artistes the truth about their music then who can? Was the music not made for the same fans to listen and appreciate in the first place?
Zlatan wasn’t alone in his irresponsibility during this period, his equally famous partner in crime Naira Marley couldn’t let him take hog all the attention and proceeded to make unnecessary and silly jokes about the Corona virus situation in Lagos on his Twitter.
Naira Marley asked his fans to signify if they don’t believe in Corona Virus before starting a long compilation of dreadful and irresponsible jokes about the virus.
Both artistes, when confronted with their lack of tact and intelligence to deal with the situation turned to the “oh-so-generic” celebrity response by insinuating that the dissenting fans are bitter despite being broke. So typical, yet hugely disappointing!
It certainly wasn’t fine when Naira Marley and Zlatan became the poster boys for internet fraud and cyber crimes after the EFCC picked them up last year whipping up a storm of attention that propelled the duo’s careers to new heights. However, it was understandable.
With this duo’s irresponsible take on the Corona virus situation, it is clear as day now that the pop stars don’t understand the impact of their influence on their supporters and fans— and if they do, then that makes them tragically senseless for choosing to sling mud at fans instead of being a voice of reason and encouragement in these desperate times.
What makes this entire saga more tragic is that Naira Marley seems to know what is right but only engaged in this wanton irresponsibility to whip up attention for his new video (which will not be referenced). This is a man fast approaching his forties and if the saying about forever, forties and fools is true then the self dubbed president of the Marlins nation needs to deeply reflect on his actions and decisions before it is too late.
These are desperate times and everyone should join hands on deck to ensure that the nation comes out of this period with minimal damage to lives not whipping up sentiments that are best left in the gutter! Leave the bullshit for the birds
